Abstract

Background: Dyspeptic symptoms have a high prevalence in the general population and represent a common reason
for consulting a primary care physicians. Symptoms of dyspepsia most commonly result from peptic ulcer disease,
gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), functional disorders (non-ulcer dyspepsia), and malignancy. Endoscopy
offers the potential for early diagnosis of structural disease.
Objective: To determine the endoscopic findings in young patients presenting with Proton Pump inhibitor-resistant
dyspepsia.
Methods: A cross sectional descriptive study conducted from 25 August2014 to 24 January 2015. All PPI-resistant
dyspepsia patients received treatment indoor or at outpatient department or managed in emergency were studied.
Questionnaires were used to collect data which were analyzed using SPSS version 10 software.
Results: In total, 138 participants’ data were analyzed. The M:F ratio was 1.28:1, mean age 31.86 years (SD = 9.58).
Gastritis were the most common endoscopic findings in dyspepsia patients which was 25(18.2%).
Conclusion: Our study did not specifically address management strategies. However, the high prevalence of oesophagitis
(18%) and peptic ulcerations (14.5%) were infected with H. pylori, suggests that most patients presenting with
uninvestigated dyspepsia in primary care can be safely managed initially with acid suppressive therapy or treatment
of H. pylori, if the patient is infected
