Abstract

ABSTRACT
Aim and objective: The purpose of this study is to describe the management of bowel obstruction caused by ascaris
lumbricoides. This article reports the role of phosphate (kleen) enema to relieve intestinal obstruction due to Ascaris
lumbricoides worms at DHQ hospital, Timergara, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Pakistan.
Materials and Methods: A prospective study of 28 children who were managed for symptomatic intestinal ascariasis at
DHQ hospital Timergara within 14 months from April 2014 to June 2015. This study involved children aged 2-12 years,
who were admitted and managed for intestinal obstruction. All the patients were managed conservatively with rectal
phosphate enemas and NG suction initially keeping the patient NPO on IV fluids. Majority of the patients responded to
the conservative treatment and few who could not, were managed surgically.
Results: There were 18 (64.28%) boys and 10 (35.71%) girls. The age range was 2-12 years, with peak occurrence
at 2-4 years of age. Twenty four patients with acute presentation responded to conservative management using rectal
administration of phosphate enemas.
Conclusion: We recommend non-operative treatment as the primary option of management in case of Intestinal obstruction
due to ascaris lumbricoides worms.
